Trans Inclusion Workshop

March 18, 2010 - Kamloops, BC & WebEx

The purpose of this workshop is to address the importance of social inclusiveness for the health of transgender people.  Through the sharing of stories, ideas, and information that links health and well-being to issues of social inclusiveness, we will explore ways that an organization, such as the Women’s Health Research Network, can become more welcoming of transgender people by raising awareness and providing access to trans-related resources. Fundraising in Challenging Economic Times

March 11, 2010 – Victoria, BC

An effective fund development program should be a permanent part of every organization. If that doesn’t describe your current situation, be part of the learning and relearning at this upcoming workshop with fundraising expert Judy Lightwater. Due to the economic changes of the last year, some elements of fund development have changed. Donor relations are more important than ever, as is complete accountability and never under-budgeting. This session will take place Thursday, March 11, 2010 from 9:30am -3:30pm at the University Club, University of Victoria. Scholarship, Teaching and Learning in the Age of the Plastic Body -
Dialogues with Cosmetic Surgery: A Feminist Primer

March 12-13, 2010 – Vancouver, BC

This interdisciplinary conference celebrates the publication of Cosmetic Surgery: A Feminist Primer (Heyes & Jones eds., Ashgate, 2009) with presentations by anthology authors and others interested in interrogating the mainstreaming and proliferation of cosmetic surgeries. The event will involve teachers, students and scholars in keynote, panel and workshop sessions designed to engage participants in interrogations of the significances and implications of the phenomenon of cosmetic surgery. Webcast: Gendering the National Framework

March 29, 2010 - everywhere

In 2009 a national, virtual Community of Practice (vCoP) provided the opportunity for a "virtual discussion" of issues, research, and programming related to girls' and women's substance use in Canada. The vCoP involved planners, decision-makers, direct service providers, educators, NGO leaders, policy analysts and researchers working to implement the National Framework for Action to Reduce the Harms Associated with Alcohol and other Drugs and Substances in Canada.This webcast will:
* Discuss the benefits of applying sex/gender/diversity based analysis in the substance use field
* Share highlights of the virtual discussions on topics, such as girls' substance use, trauma-informed approaches to addiction treatment, and women-centred approaches to harm reduction
* Introduce 4 resources that were developed out of the collaborative learning process

Unpacking the Female Indigenous Body

April 23-24, 2010 – Vancouver, BC

A Performance and Dialogue experience, this event will be one of creative celebration and critical investigation. The creative performance works of Lori Blondeau and Skeena Reece, preeminent Canadian performance artists, will be celebrated. Both artists will be creating new works that respond to the film A Man Called Horse. The day-long dialogue on April 24th will feature graduate students' and professors' presentations on the topic of the representation of Indigenous Woman on the screen, on paper or on television and beyond. Historical, contemporary, in-between, first person-all fields of inquiry are welcomed. Hulleah J. Tsinhnahjinnie Director of the C.N. Gorman Museum and Assistant Professor in the Department of Native American Studies at University of California (Davis) will present the keynote address on broader issues concerning aboriginal womanhood and representation. Dana Claxton, the Ruth Wynn Woodward Chair in Women Studies at Simon Fraser University will lead the critical investigation as Moderator and she looks forward to your contributions to a much needed and desired macro-conversation concerning Indigenous Womanhood and representation. Explanatory Frameworks for Health Disparities

March 4, 2010 - Vancouver, BC

The workshop, Explanatory Frameworks for Health Disparities was held on Thursday, March 4th, 2010, at BCIT’s downtown campus in Vancouver, BC.  The event was attended by approximately 60 people in person and on WebEx. Participants included Jo Phelan, Associate Professor of Sociomedical Sciences, Mailman School of Public Health, Columbia University; Bruce Link, Professor of Epidemiology and Sociomedical Sciences, Mailman School of Public Health Columbia University, and Research Scientist at the New York State Psychiatric Institute; Lynn Weber, Professor of Psychology and Women’s Studies, University of South Carolina.

WHRN "Wrap-Up" - Taking the Pulse of Women's Health Research in BC: Celebrating the WHRN

Thank you for your interest in this very special event celebrating the accomplishments of the WHRN since 2005.. This final event included speakers and a networking tea at each site, plus a videoconference linking all of the locations for short talks by the WHRN’s Co-Leaders and a presentation of the new WHRN Legacy Report. Participants joined in Kamloops to hear host Natalie Clark and guest speaker Wendy Hulko; Kelowna with host Joan Bottorff and guest speaker Kathy Rush; Prince George with host Dawn Hemingway and guest speaker Sarah Boyd-Noel; Vancouver with host Olena Hankivsky and guest speaker: Katherine Rossiter; and Victoria with host Cecilia Benoit and guest speaker Nancy Poole. The session brought together participants interested in celebrating the best of the WHRN and forging new connections. WHRN Public Presentation - Migration, Minorities, and Maternity: a three country international comparison (Canada, Germany, and the U.K.) with Dr. Gina Higginbottom, Associate Professor and Canada Research Chair in Ethnicity and Health, Faculty of Nursing, University of Alberta

Join the WHRN for a public presentation by Gina Higginbottom. Gina's research and teaching is within the domain of ethnicity and health, she holds a Canada Research Chair in this field. She is Visiting Professor at Sheffield Hallam University, UK and affiliated Associate Professor at the University of Karolinska, Stockholm, Sweden. Dr. Higginbottom supervises undergraduates, postgraduates and post doctoral fellows in this field. She is the recipient of several awards and distinctions; a Smith & Nephew Nursing Research Scholarship, The Mary Seacole Leadership Award and a National Primary Care Research Fellowship in the UK. Gina is Assistant Editor of Ethnicity and Health journal, academic advisor to Alberta Health Services (Edmonton) Regional Diversity Committee and co-chair of the IIQM 10th Advances in Qualitative Methods, Vancouver 2009. Is Menopause a Disease? - A WHRN Live Webinar

Following up on the CIHR Café Scientifique, we will discuss different perspectives from around the world on gendered aging with input from women doctors from Eastern Europe and India. How does the emergence and popularity of menopause-specific products, pills and supplements reflect how we view menopause as a society? Hormone therapy controversies – do women's hormones need replacing? "Bioidentical" vs "synthetic" hormones: Is one better than the other, and what are the risks of ovarian hormone therapy? Hot flashes and night sweats – is estrogen the only option? Is osteoporosis inevitable? Challenging Myths and Misperceptions: Working to Reduce Stigma and Enhance Public Understanding of People Who Work in the Sex Industry

January 16th & 17th, 2009 - Victoria, BC

The University of Victoria Hub of the WHRN hosted an international conference on January 16th and 17th, 2009, at the Bedford Regency Hotel in downtown Victoria. The conference - Challenging Myths and Misperceptions: Working to Reduce Stigma and Enhance Public Understanding of People Who Work in the Sex Industry - included a public lecture the evening of Friday, January 16th. This session featured researchers from across Canada and New Zealand, presenting the latest research on the effects of different policy environments on the health and well-being of people who work in the sex industry. A day-long workshop was held January 17th,with informal presentations and participant-led discussion aimed at designing an educational curriculum that can be used to reframe publicly-held stereotypes of sex workers.Click here to view the agenda (PDF). We are also pleased to announce that two major publications from the UVic hub of the WHRN were launched during this conference:

The first, Gendering the Health Determinants Framework: Why Girls’ and Women’s Health Matters (Cecilia Benoit and Leah Shumka, authors), isthe second in a series of WHRN research primers. Copies of the primer are available from the WHRN upon request, and can be downloaded here.

The second is a special supplement to the Canadian Journal of Public Health entitled Finding Dignity in Health Care and Health Care Work, edited by Cecilia Benoit and Helga Hallgrimsdottir. The supplement will be circulated to the journal’s membership across the country and an additional 1000 copies will be printed and available for circulation throughout the province.
