Women's Health Research Network Funding Opportunities

Application Guidelines

The final WHRN grants competition is now closed. Deadline for submissions was December 4, 2009. Results have been communicated to the applicants and the names of the successful applicants and their projects were published in the January 2010 WHRN e-newsletter.

Seed Funds for Grant Application Development

Purpose: To provide support for the preparation of research grant applications for work focused on gender and girls' and women's health in British Columbia. Interdisciplinary, transdisciplinary and intersectoral research teams are encouraged to apply. Financial assistance for other types of grant applications (i.e. training, conference, or infrastructure funding) will not be provided through this program.

Eligibility requirements:

  • Must be eligible to apply for research funding in Canada, and have primary affiliation in British Columbia
  • Must not have other funding for development of the research project in question.
  • Must not be registered as a student

Eligible expenses:

  • Conference calls and other 'virtual' meetings between prospective collaborators
  • Travel to meet with prospective collaborators
  • Research assistance
  • Editing of research grant by a professional editor
  • Statistical consulting
  • Office expenses

For other expenses, please check with the WHRN prior to submitting your expense claim. For this, the last WHRN grants competition, preference will be given to those with projects/plans that are ready to begin by early 2010.

Funding amount: up to $4,000

Trainee Travel Funds

Purpose: To provide travel assistance to research trainees doing work focused on gender and girls' and women's health in British Columbia. Funding is intended to enable graduate students, postdoctoral trainees, instructors, and community-based researchers to participate in scholarly meetings and gain experience in research dissemination (e.g., to present a paper or poster at an official conference or symposium).

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Any person involved with research is eligible for a trainee grant as long as they do not hold a tenure track position in research.
  • Eligible trainees include graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, research associates, undergraduate students, instructors, and community-based researchers.
  • Proposed work must be directly related to the WHRN's research goals and vision. Successful applicants must acknowledge the WHRN in any presentations, posters, and manuscripts and, where applicable, include the WHRN logo.
  • Must show proof that you are: presenting a paper which you authored or coauthored at an academic symposium or conference, OR exhibiting a poster (session) you created for an academic symposium or conference, OR acting as facilitator or co-facilitator for a workshop you developed, at an academic symposium or conference.
  • Must provide original travel documents including invoice numbers (where appropriate), date of issue, GST, and total cost.

Eligible expenses include:

  • economy airfare
  • accommodation
  • conference registration
  • meals

For other expenses, please check with the WHRN prior to submitting your expense claim. Expense claims must include all original receipts and a full explanation of the costs must be submitted by March 15, 2010. For this, the last WHRN grants competition, preference will be given to those requesting support for travel by early 2010.

Funding amount: up to $1,000

Trainee Research Funds

Purpose: To provide support to research trainees doing work focused on gender and girls' and women's health in British Columbia. Research support funding is intended to facilitate research activities directly related to a research project.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Any person involved with research is eligible for a trainee grant as long as they do not hold a tenure track position in research
  • Eligible trainees include graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, research associates, undergraduate students, instructors, and community-based researchers.
  • Proposed work must be directly related to the WHRN's research goals and vision. Successful applicants must acknowledge the WHRN in any presentations, posters, and manuscripts and, where applicable, include the WHRN logo.

Eligible expenses include:

  • Data collection costs (e.g., ground travel/mileage; participant honoraria; postage; printing of recruitment materials and questionnaires; long distance telephone charges)
  • Research support costs (interview transcription services; software purchase; office supplies)
  • Research related communication/dissemination costs (printing or document reproduction costs; research poster production)
  • Costs for attending a defined research training program not available through the WHRN (software workshops, etc.) that is directly related to the approved research project

Expense claims must include all original receipts and a full explanation of the costs must be submitted by March 15, 2010. For this, the last WHRN grants competition, preference will be given to those with projects/plans that are ready to begin by early 2010.

Funding amount: up to $2,000

WHRN Grants in Community-Based Research

In partnership with the Vancouver Foundation, the WHRN is funding individual and team community based research grants related to women’s health and gender and health. Individual grants are worth up to $1000; team grants up to $4000.

Individual Community-based Research Funds

Purpose: To provide support to an INDIVIDUAL who identifies as a community-based researcher focusing on gender and women’s health who requires training and/or education in health research.

Eligible expenses:conference attendance, workshop attendance, university/college course attendance, etc.

Eligibility requirements for CBR funds:

  • Must live and work in the research community
  • Primary applicant cannot be working in a full-time / tenure-track / tenured position at a University or College
  • Primary applicant cannot be a full-time student at a University or College  
  • Successful applicants must acknowledge the WHRN in any manuscripts and, where appropriate, include the WHRN logo.

Proposals must display:

    • An understanding of community health issues and concerns
    • A commitment to furthering research collaborations focused on active community involvement in the area of gender and girls’ and women’s health
    • A commitment to participatory, action-oriented and inclusive research processes

     

Expense claims must include all original receipts and a full explanation of the costs must be submitted by March 15, 2010. For this, the last WHRN grants competition, preference will be given to those with projects/plans that are ready to begin by early 2010.

Funding amount: up to $1,000

Team Community-based Research Funds

Purposes: (1) To provide support to a CBR team that is in the early stages of developing a research proposal focused on gender and girls’ and women’s health in British Columbia; OR (2) to provide a CBR team funds directed at knowledge transfer activities.

Eligible expenses: meeting and workshop expenses, travel expenses, honoraria for research team members’ participation and/or community members’ participation, knowledge transfer activities (such as community meetings, report design and publication, etc.)

Eligibility requirements for CBR funds:

  • Must live and work in the research community
  • Primary applicant cannot be affiliated with a University or College as a student, staff or faculty member
  • Must have attended a WHRN CBR workshop
  • If collecting data, must receive ethical approval. If you are not affiliated with an organization or institution that can provide ethical reviews, you may apply through the Community Based Research Centre’s Research Ethics Board http://reb.cbrc.net/index.php
  • Successful applicants must acknowledge the WHRN in any manuscripts and, where appropriate, include the WHRN logo.

Proposals must display:

    • An understanding of community health issues and concerns
    • A commitment to furthering research collaborations focused on active community involvement in the area of gender and girls’ and women’s health
    • A commitment to participatory and inclusive research processes
    • A commitment to action research whereby the research is relevant and meaningful to those who participated in the study.

Funding amount: up to $4,000

Application Process

A complete application requires the following items. If you do not submit all required documentation in the correct format, your application cannot be considered.

Your submission must include:

  • A two-page (maximum) proposal that addresses:
    • The WHRN funding category to which you are applying
    • An abstract of your proposed research or the conference or workshop you plan to attend (if applicable)
    • How your research adopts a sex, gender, or diversity lens
    • How your research will support or promote the health of girls and women in BC
    • Your plans for receiving ethical approval (if applicable)
    • How you will transfer knowledge gained through the WHRN funds back to the WHRN community (see “Reporting Requirements”)
    • Any past involvement with the WHRN/WHRN activities and events
  • A detailed budget (one-page) with justification detailing how WHRN funds will be spent. Please include other sources of income and be specific about the WHRN’s contribution.
  • An abbreviated Curriculum Vitae, maximum two pages (if working as a team, please include an abbreviated CV for each member)
  • The names and contact information for three referees.

 

Submit all documents as one file with the following format:

  1. Cover letter (1 page)
  2. Proposal (2 pages maximum)
  3. Budget (1 page)
  4. Résumé + referee contact information (2 pages maximum)
  5. Notice of acceptance to a workshop/ conference, if applicable

 

Documents must be submitted by email to Susan Dixon in a single .doc file (Word). Your file must be labeled as follows: yourlastname_yourfirstinitialWHRN.doc ( e.g. dixon_sWHRN.doc).

In the case of applications being submitted on behalf of a research team, the document should be labeled using the last name and first initial of the principal researcher for that application. Documents that exceed the page limit or are not submitted in the correct .doc format will not be reviewed.

Reporting Requirements for Awardees

Awardees are required to communicate the findings or outcomes of their WHRN grant to the WHRN community. Knowledge transfer obligations to the WHRN community may include: presenting findings at a WHRN event, facilitating or contributing to a WHRN workshop, or being featured on the WHRN website. Students who are funded will be asked to post their abstracts or conference proceedings on our website.

A final report must be submitted by email to the WHRN within a year of receiving the funds. Click here to download the reporting template.

Important Dates

Deadline for applications: Friday, December 4th, 2009

A subcommittee comprised of the WHRN's Co-Leaders, Oversight Committee members, and/or Research Directors evaluate all WHRN grant applications. Applicants have been notified of the results.

For this, the last WHRN grants competition, preference was given to those with projects/plans that are ready to begin by early 2010 (funds must be expended and reported on by March 15, 2010). Travel and other claims being submitted for reimbursement on all grants must be received by March 15, 2010. Claims received after that date will not be processed.
